Another problem that can develop in your exhaust system is rust, particularly if you live on the coast or in an area where roads are brined frequently to help melt snow. Rust can compromise both the muffler and the exhaust pipes, necessitating replacement. If the muffler rusts through, your car will operate at a louder volume than in the past. Finally, some cars eventually have trouble related to the catalytic converter. This component changes dangerous carbon monoxide into less toxic carbon dioxide and water vapor. If it becomes clogged or stops working properly, your automobile may overheat or produce less power.
